WUWT Ice Survey Shows Thickening Arctic Ice

The WUWT Arctic Ice Thickness Survey has been conducted from the comfort of a warm living room over the last half hour, without sponsors, excessive CO2 emissions or hypothermia. The data is collected from the US military web site http://imb.crrel.usace.army.mil. All of the active military buoys show significant thickening ice over the past six months to a year

At the link above, graphs, charts, and explanation.

Don’t be fooled by the media scare tactics and general hype. The sky, despite Gore, Obama, et.al., is not falling.

Buy and save ice: it will be valuable some day

Category: global warming,mediaharmonicminer @ 7:39 am

If an oil company sponsored a study wherein scientists concluded that arctic sea ice will remain relatively constant within a range of fluctuation, the eviro-pagan-eco-panic lobby would cry, “But those scientists are in the pay of the evil polluters, and aren’t objective!”

The most important thing you need to know about THIS study is in the last paragraph of the article, reproduced here:

Arctic sea ice melting faster than expected

The study was supported by the NOAA Climate Change Program Office, the Institute for the Study of the Ocean and Atmosphere and the U.S. Department of Energy.

You don’t suppose that the NOAA Climate Change Program Office has just a little, teeny motivation to always find climate change in the results of any study, do you?

Nah. They’re all just objective scientists, disinterestedly going about the business of the people.  They really all wish global warming wasn’t true, so they could just go home and collect unemployment checks.

Somewhere between 10 and 100 times as much money has been spent by government as has been spent by private industry researching the same issue, “proving” global warming is a big problem, and is caused by humans, mostly.  Huge numbers of scientists and bureaucrats depend for their very living on continuously finding more evidence of global warming, all the while claiming scientists working for private industry are “tainted” by industry money.

Something smells about this bit of sophistry, and it’s not the methane or the CO2.

Agenda journalism meets agenda science

Category: global warming,higher education,media,scienceharmonicminer @ 10:40 am

In a typical profanity laced diatribe, the Daily Kos accuses George Will of lying or ignorance, fielder’s choice:

George Will — “According to the University of Illinois’ ACRC, global sea ice levels now equal those of 1979.”

University of Illinois’ ACRC — “We do not know where George Will is getting his information, but our data shows … [the] decrease in sea ice area is roughly equal to the area of Texas, California, and Oklahoma combined. It is disturbing that the Washington Post would publish such information without first checking the facts.”

This is a reference to a column in the Washington Post by George Will.

And despite all the eco-pagan handwringing, wailing and nashing of teeth, it appears that Will was correct, and the ACRC was engaged in a certain amount of spin in its disingenuous statement.

It’s got to be tough when the public spokesperson for the ACRC can’t read a graph.  Check it out yourself:  you’ll see the values go up, and the values go down, but they consistently orbit around the same general center.

I share one bit of frustration with the Daily Kos, though for different reasons.  I wish WAPO would respond a bit more vigorously to false allegations when it’s one of their few conservative columnists being attacked.  But, for now, I guess this will have to do.

The University of Illinois center that Will cited has now said it doesn’t agree with his conclusion, but earlier this year it put out a statement
(http://arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/global.sea.ice.area.pdf)
that was among several sources for this column and that notes in part that “Observed global sea ice area, defined here as a sum of N. Hemisphere and S. Hemisphere sea ice areas, is near or slightly lower than those observed in late 1979,”

It would seem that ACRC’s spokesperson doesn’t read their own website.  And it would seem that the eco-pagan global warming panic-mongers simply believe spokespersons without checking the facts themselves…  which makes it especially funny that they accuse George Will and WAPO of not doing adequate fact checking.

You can’t parody this

Category: global warmingharmonicminer @ 10:27 am

You probably saw this report, that some climate damage is already irreversible.

Many damaging effects of climate change are already basically irreversible, researchers declared Monday, warning that even if carbon emissions can somehow be halted temperatures around the globe will remain high until at least the year 3000.

Now, let’s get real here.  The year 3000?!?!?!  Holy Ozone, Batman.

This is so risible that it should be a fake newscast at The Onion.   Do these guys know NOTHING about the large temperature variations of the last 2000 years, when it’s been both warmer and colder than now?  Do they really think they can account for the very large natural variations in predicting the tiny input humans have had into the climate?

This news report masquerading as news is actually a Public Relations Release of the IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change), surely the most politically motivated and thoroughly bent UN endeavor since the UN Oil for Food Program.  Of course, the AP continues its “see no skeptics, hear no skeptics, speak no skepticism” approach to reporting on the matter.  It’s so common that its hardly noticeable anymore…

But this really is extreme.  These clowns (who else would make 1000 year predictions on climate, except that it will probably be different, who know exactly how?) are really funny, except when they’re dangerous.

See yesterday’s post, and ponder the pontifications of perfidious politicians pretending to do objective science.

If you have the patience, here are some real scientists actually debating the point:

Climate change may be real, but….

Category: global warmingharmonicminer @ 10:53 am

For some time we’ve been pointing out all the brilliant scientists who say anthropogenic global warming is mostly a myth, and/or that the earth may not be warming at all, at least not appreciably. It’s looking more and more like global COOLING may be the real problem, and it isn’t caused by humans either:

It’s time to pray for global warming

If you’re wondering why North America is starting to resemble nuclear winter, then you missed the news.

At December’s U.N. Global Warming conference in Poznan, Poland, 650 of the world’s top climatologists stood up and said man-made global warming is a media generated myth without basis. Said climatologist Dr. David Gee, Chairman of the International Geological Congress, “For how many years must the planet cool before we begin to understand that the planet is not warming?”

I asked myself, why would such obviously smart guy say such a ridiculous thing? But it turns out he’s right.

The earth’s temperature peaked in 1998. It’s been falling ever since; it dropped dramatically in 2007 and got worse in 2008, when temperatures touched 1980 levels.

Meanwhile, the University of Illinois’ Arctic Climate Research Center released conclusive satellite photos showing that Arctic ice is back to 1979 levels. What’s more, measurements of Antarctic ice now show that its accumulation is up 5 percent since 1980.

In other words, during what was supposed to be massive global warming, the biggest chunks of ice on earth grew larger. Just as an aside, do you remember when the hole in the ozone layer was going to melt Antarctica? But don’t worry, we’re safe now, that was the nineties.

Dr. Kunihiko, Chancellor of Japan’s Institute of Science and Technology said this: “CO2 emissions make absolutely no difference one way or the other … every scientist knows this, but it doesn’t pay to say so.” Now why would a learned man say such a crazy thing?

This is where the looney left gets lost. Their mantra is atmospheric CO2 levels are escalating and this is unquestionably causing earth’s temperature rise. But ask yourself — if global temperatures are experiencing the biggest sustained drop in decades, while CO2 levels continue to rise — how can it be true?

Ironically, in spite of being shown false, we must now pray for it. Because a massive study, just released by the Russian Government, contains overwhelming evidence that earth is on the verge of another Ice Age.

Oy vey, we’re going to have a huge new initiative in the Obama administration to fight global warming.

Talk about generals always wanting to fight the last war…. even if it never really happened.

In the meantime, don’t hold your breath waiting for mea culpas from all the gullible folk who signed on, big time, to the global warming panic-mongers.

And buy a good warm coat.

Cleaner air = climate warming?

Category: global warmingharmonicminer @ 12:19 pm

Hmmmm

BBC NEWS | Science & Environment | Europe’s lost mist ‘boosts heat’

The number of foggy, misty and hazy days is diminishing across the continent, say scientists who have analysed the meteorological data.

The researchers found this clearing of the air in the past 30 years may have amplified the warming of Europe.

They report their findings in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Our Socialist new Climate Czar

Category: economy,environment,global warming,left,socialismharmonicminer @ 10:51 am

When you think about it, it’s kind of funny that anyone is called a “climate czar.” Generally, a czar is someone who had power over something, and I think it’s pretty obvious that humans have very little power over the climate. But Obama’s new “climate czarina” is Carol M. Browner, and she is a card carrying socialist with bad plans for U.S. sovereignty and our economy.  (Much more at the link.)

Until last week, Carol M. Browner, President-elect Barack Obama’s pick as global warming czar, was listed as one of 14 leaders of a socialist group’s Commission for a Sustainable World Society, which calls for “global governance” and says rich countries must shrink their economies to address climate change.

By Thursday, Mrs. Browner’s name and biography had been removed from Socialist International’s Web page, though a photo of her speaking June 30 to the group’s congress in Greece was still available.

Socialist International, an umbrella group for many of the world’s social democratic political parties such as Britain’s Labor Party, says it supports socialism and is harshly critical of U.S. policies.

The group’s Commission for a Sustainable World Society, the organization’s action arm on climate change, says the developed world must reduce consumption and commit to binding and punitive limits on greenhouse gas emissions.

Many of us have long said that “climate change” is just a smokescreen for socialist takeovers of various aspects of the economy, or maybe just the whole thing. Obama’s appointment does nothing to allay such concerns.

What global warming? REDUX

Category: environment,global warmingharmonicminer @ 10:35 am

We’ve been commenting on this already. Here’s a Telegraph article saying that 2008 was the year man-made global warming was disproved

Easily one of the most important stories of 2008 has been all the evidence suggesting that this may be looked back on as the year when there was a turning point in the great worldwide panic over man-made global warming. Just when politicians in Europe and America have been adopting the most costly and damaging measures politicians have ever proposed, to combat this supposed menace, the tide has turned in three significant respects.

First, all over the world, temperatures have been dropping in a way wholly unpredicted by all those computer models which have been used as the main drivers of the scare. Last winter, as temperatures plummeted, many parts of the world had snowfalls on a scale not seen for decades. This winter, with the whole of Canada and half the US under snow, looks likely to be even worse. After several years flatlining, global temperatures have dropped sharply enough to cancel out much of their net rise in the 20th century.

Ever shriller and more frantic has become the insistence of the warmists, cheered on by their army of media groupies such as the BBC, that the last 10 years have been the “hottest in history” and that the North Pole would soon be ice-free, as the poles remain defiantly icebound and those polar bears fail to drown. All those hysterical predictions that we are seeing more droughts and hurricanes than ever before have infuriatingly failed to materialise.

Even the more cautious scientific acolytes of the official orthodoxy now admit that, thanks to “natural factors” such as ocean currents, temperatures have failed to rise as predicted (although they plaintively assure us that this cooling effect is merely “masking the underlying warming trend”, and that the temperature rise will resume worse than ever by the middle of the next decade).

Secondly, 2008 was the year when any pretence that there was a “scientific consensus” in favour of man-made global warming collapsed. At long last, as in the Manhattan Declaration last March, hundreds of proper scientists, including many of the world’s most eminent climate experts, have been rallying to pour scorn on that “consensus” which was only a politically engineered artefact, based on ever more blatantly manipulated data and computer models programmed to produce no more than convenient fictions.

Thirdly, as banks collapsed and the global economy plunged into its worst recession for decades, harsh reality at last began to break in on those self-deluding dreams which have for so long possessed almost every politician in the western world. As we saw in this month’s Poznan conference, when 10,000 politicians, officials and “environmentalists” gathered to plan next year’s “son of Kyoto” treaty in Copenhagen, panicking politicians are waking up to the fact that the world can no longer afford all those quixotic schemes for “combating climate change” with which they were so happy to indulge themselves in more comfortable times.

What global warming? It’s getting colder.

Category: global warmingharmonicminer @ 10:56 pm

Yet another brilliant scientist of worldwide repute who thinks anthropogenic global warming (AGW) is a complete scam.

Add his name to these.

The global warming economy-busters who ignore the opinions of these brilliant scientists have no shame, and no credibility.  “The debate is over” …  heh.  One way to end a debate, of course, is to lock all those who disagree with you out of the room.
